Ready to love your smile?

Early Orthodontics

As a parent, you want to give your child the best possible start in life, and that includes the foundation for a healthy, confident smile. At Stork Orthodontics, we believe in a proactive approach to your child’s oral health. That’s why we offer specialized early orthodontics in West Des Moines, also known as Phase I treatment, to identify and address developing issues before they become more complex.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child has their first orthodontic check-up by age seven. This early evaluation isn’t about getting braces right away; it’s about giving Dr. Stork the opportunity to assess your child’s jaw and dental development. This simple, preventative step can set the stage for a lifetime of easier dental care and a beautiful, healthy smile.

What Is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment is an interceptive approach designed for children who still have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. The primary goal is not to perfect the alignment of every tooth, but rather to correct significant developmental issues with the jaw and bite.

By intervening at a young age, we can take advantage of a child’s natural growth to guide their jaws into a more favorable position. This often makes future treatment (Phase II) shorter, less invasive, and more effective. Think of it as laying a proper foundation before building the house—it makes the final construction much smoother.

Why Start Orthodontics Early?

Preventing Future Issues

Early intervention can often help avoid surgeries that would have been otherwise recommended.  Jaw issues that are addressed early while a child is growing like a cross bite (top teeth tucked inside the bottom teeth instead of being outside) can prevent the need for surgery.  We can also use appliances or elastics to correct bite problems like severe overbites or underbites that would require surgical correction in the future.

Guiding Jaw Growth

One of the most powerful aspects of early orthodontic treatment for children in Iowa is the ability to guide jaw development. If we detect an imbalance, such as a narrow upper jaw or a developing crossbite, we can use specific appliances to encourage proper, symmetrical growth. This helps create a better relationship between the upper and lower jaws, improving both function and facial harmony.

Creating Space for Adult Teeth

Crowding is one of the most common orthodontic problems. Early treatment allows us to address this issue by expanding the arches to create more room for permanent teeth to erupt. By making space early, we can often prevent the need for tooth extractions later in life and reduce the severity of crowding.

Preventing Future Issues

Early intervention can help stop harmful oral habits, such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, that can negatively impact dental development. We can also correct bite problems like severe overbites or underbites that could lead to uneven tooth wear or jaw joint issues if left untreated. Addressing these concerns early protects your child’s long-term oral health.

Signs Your Child May Need Early Orthodontics

While Dr. Stork is the best person to diagnose any issues, there are several signs parents can look for that may indicate a need for an early orthodontic evaluation:

  • Losing baby teeth unusually early or late
  • Difficulty with chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Continued thumb or finger sucking after age five
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth
  • Jaws that shift, make sounds, or appear out of proportion
  • Teeth that don’t meet at all or meet in an abnormal way (crossbite, underbite, overbite)

If you notice any of these signs, scheduling a complimentary consultation is a great first step.

How Early Orthodontic Treatment Works

Our approach to early braces for kids is gentle, thoughtful, and always customized to your child’s specific needs.

Your Child’s First Consultation

Your child’s first visit is designed to be informative for you and fun for them. An easy 3D digital X-ray and photos will be used to get a clearer picture of their developing teeth and jawbones. We’ll discuss our findings with you and let you know if immediate treatment is recommended or when we should see your child again to best guide their growth.

Customized Treatment Plan

If treatment is needed, Dr. Stork will create a personalized plan. This may involve a simple appliance like a palatal expander to widen the upper jaw, a limited set of braces to align front teeth, or an appliance to correct a harmful habit. We will explain the process in detail, so you and your child feel comfortable and informed.

Monitoring Growth and Progress

After the active phase of early treatment is complete, your child will typically enter a “rest” period. During this time, we will continue to see them for periodic check-ups to monitor the eruption of their permanent teeth and ensure their jaw growth is on track. This careful observation ensures we can begin the next phase of treatment, if needed, at the most opportune time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most children who undergo Phase I treatment will still need a second phase of treatment (usually full braces or aligners) once all their permanent teeth have come in. However, the goal of early treatment is to make this second phase much simpler, shorter, and more successful.

The appliances used in early orthodontics are designed to be as gentle as possible. Your child might experience some mild soreness or adjustment for a few days as they get used to a new appliance, but this discomfort is temporary and easily managed.

We agree with the American Association of Orthodontists' recommendation of age seven. At this age, the first permanent molars and incisors have usually erupted, allowing us to effectively evaluate your child's developing bite and spot any potential issues.

Yes, absolutely! Orthodontic check-ups and regular dental cleanings are both essential parts of your child's oral health. We will work in partnership with your family dentist to ensure your child's teeth and gums stay healthy throughout their treatment.
